1. The square and streets around it were named after the communist Jeanne Labourbe. For a long time the slope was abandoned and after the de-communization, it was simply forgotten to rename.
2. Historically, on the slope there were 5 mansions with the gardens on the slope, reinforcement of which formed the diversity of relief and plantings.
3. Today, due to the abandonment, the square is a temporary base of about 50 species of rare migratory birds.
4. There are 3 entrances to the Odessa catacombs.
The sociological survey and SWOT analysis showed that the residents love the square because of its history, the diverse climate and the atmosphere of the "anti-city". Fears belong to the Primorskaya str, the infrastructure of which is a sign of degrading space (carwash, service stations, etc.). Also, among the shortcomings were barriers, danger, lack of lighting and the lack of common practices between upper and lower platoes (the inhabitants of the upper streets and Primorskaya str practically do not use the territory with common objectives). The most optimistic among the inhabitants was the hope that the emergence of a new square will be an impetus for the renovation of the neighborhood territory.
Досліджуємо ногами | explore with feet
We "out in the field" in winter, in the cloudy, sunny weather and during the rain; watched the flow of water, the work of wind and sun. We were kicking each of the projected paths, even if, at first glance, it seemed impossible. We migrated through the thickets and reinforcement walls. We saw enchanting prospects in lawns, covered with garbage and watched the port, as a movie.
We see value in the existing forest and lawns and do not want to lose it. It is extremely important for us to open the opportunity to enjoy the existing treasure in the heart of the city, without damaging it.
In the heart of the heart of the Popular Center, Quiet Center, Primorskaya and Peresyp is the Square of Jeanne Lebourbe. But as the clock going in the opposite direction, the square works the opposite. With which side does not approach, the square forms a deadlock with barely visible capillaries-stairs, which are used only by the inhabitants of the Primorskaya street.
The square of Jeanne Labourbe should not be the end of the center, and the Marinesko descent with the Primorskaya str shouldn't be a dead end. We propose to consider the square as a corridor connecting 4 rooms: City Center, Port, Greek park, Kherson square. We want to shift the center from geometric to functional. The square of Jeanne Labourbe can be at least its middle. And in some way, even the starting point: semantic, functional, new.
The upper city is full of classical theaters and museums - it is the center of academic culture. And the bottom, the Primorskaya str., is full of enterprises and points of development of counterculture. There is also an underground theater with avant-garde performances, and the main urban techno scene, and alternative pubs, and the school of DJs, and graffiti spots. Opening up relationships with the environment through the Square of Jeanne Lebourbe, we are opening up opportunities for the development of counter-cultural activities. Culture itself has always been the engine of progress, if not its provocateur.
Depending on the density of activities, the number and significance of entry points, the characteristics of the landscape, flora and fauna, as well as the historical structure of the territory, 2 kinds of zones - city and anti-city - are formed in the park. The city is a busy urbanized area, a landscape typical of the upper city. Anticity is a quiet and peaceful place protected by thick greenery from the everyday life of the ever-occupied center. Placing such zones horizontally along the square, we want to shift the disposition of the relationship between the central top and the industrial bottom - vertical relations are replaced by horizontal.
History proves that earlier inhabitants also did not identify the territory of the park as a park. Before the revolution, the area on the slope belonged to the farmsteads and houses of the upper city. Or The Shah's palace, or the Pototsky Palace (Odessa Art Museum), had all their own sites, which were separated by fences, staircases and plants. Thus, the historical character of the structure of the territory dictates the zoning of the square.
The second factor of zoning: the presence of flat plateau, equidistant from each other. Each of them will be transformed into square. The closer to the center of the plateau, the higher the activity density. The most quiet and peaceful place is formed in the middle between the squares, creating a balance between different types of recreation. Therefore, a large number of affordable children's and sports facilities on an elongated plateau will combine the everyday life of the “upper” and “lower cities”, creating new collective practices and just dating. Public space is a place where everyone is equal.
Youth Square - rebel space for extreme and counterculture. In the area's programming, we do not deny that the park will continue to be the site of a gathering of informal youth - we only arrange local practices. There will be an area, a skate park and wooden stairs for sitting, where young people will feel free. Under Teschin bridge there is a space for graffiti. One of the scenarios of the event is to hold an urban competition for the best graffiti.
Entering the plateau, users encounter a playground with nonlinear functions. The main element - slides, where children will be able to descend on the playground directly from Zhvanetsky Boulevard. Somewhere we left an open ground so in winter children can rode on sledges.
The park is a real open-air museum. Realizing this, we have preserved historical and cultural value and emphasized it in design decisions. Landscape - one of the main criteria for city planning - we observe in the form of historical layers. Here both pre-revolutionary and Soviet elements, and enter the catacombs.
We already have a Greek park, Istanbul park - it's time to create the Odessa park!, what will reflect the culture of modern Odessa and will be relate to the inhabitants of the city.
| what's next?
We understand that the Square of Jeanne Labourbe will not replace (yet) the Shevchenko Park. But it will aim two main goals:
• Odesa will have the opportunity to discover the city on the other side of Preobrazhenskaya, and at the same time learn the history of their hometown.
• Residents of the nearest neighborhoods will receive a place for daily rest, a comfortable and safe way home.
The main strategic goal of the city is to open the port. It’s ours and it needs to be proud.
